Kids are always dreaming up new worlds and adventures, or at least I was as a kid, and it seems that author Rob Keeley was too...only he never stopped.
After churning out a delightful series of ghostly MG escapades, a semi-autobiographical book about a wheelchair user, and some other great stuff, he's back with a new foray into the world of make believe: a picture book about a boy who dreams up a land in the clouds.
Arthur's Saturday starts off like any other. He's waiting by the window for Maxine, a woman with a booming laugh who manages to light up even the rainiest of days.
Arthur and Maxine head to the park. But they end up in the Land of Nimbostratus, a colorful city in the clouds. There they find fluffy cloud-creatures, a heavenly tearoom, and fields of cloud stretching far into the horizon.
When Maxine pokes a rain cloud, the adventure comes to a swift - and rather damp - end. But despite being soaked through, Arthur and Maxine are undaunted, and, I doubt not, in store for many more adventures.
It's refreshing to see a children's picture book about a wheelchair user, and based on some of the autobiographical nature of the author's other work, I suspect Rob may have visited Nimbostratus himself, or at least some place like it, and can thus speak from experience.
In a world where screens and machines threaten to replace imagination, I hope children take note: your own mind is a much more exciting place than the internet, and you don't need a device to travel as high or as deep as your dreams desire.
Arthur and the Land of Nimbostratus is, like most of Rob Keeley's work, both a delightful romp full of imagination and a sweet story about the joy of connecting with others.
All in all, an adorable little story sure to bring a sunny smile to your face, even when the sky is overcast.
