Have a book you'd like us to review?

Please note that we now only accept requests from authors we've reviewed before. We each have about 50 other hobbies, so we've decided to take a break from this one for the foreseeable future.

That said, if you have a book you know we'd love, you can always try your luck! Just don't be surprised if you don't hear back from us.

We generally enjoy fantasy, science fiction, adventure, historical fiction, YA and MG. A good way to get a sense of what we like in a book is to check out our past reviews and Our Favorites page. Erin especially likes Steampunk, dinosaurs, and Frankenstein spin-offs. Anna likes YA fantasies and historical mysteries in the vein of Sherlock Holmes.

We ask that you don't send us books with heavy profanity or erotica in them, as we prefer a good, clean read.

Thanks for putting great stories out into the world!

  1. Hi, hey, and hello! On behalf of Wondertale Press, I'd like to formally invite you to read and review our new young adult fantasy novel.

I think this series would probably be more interesting for Anna, as it's fantasy. But we'd like to think that everyone would enjoy it!

It all began when the ruling elders of Wondertale Press first laid eyes on the original manuscript of the novel.

    “Zango!” they shouted.

It was like a mythical creature had landed in their midst. “Gather the magicians!”

Straight away they embarked on a quest to have this tale published. They threw down bags of gold at the feet of the authors and set the magicians to work editing and designing.

It was an exciting time. Everyone knew this was going to be mega.

And what is the name of this flamtabulous tale? The Magician’s Workshop. Readers find it to be a playful coming-of-age story, full of childhood wonder, whooshing magic, and incredibly complex characters.

It all takes place on a distant planet, billions of trillions of skyblips from our own. Everyone there lives on islands, and they can all do magic.

Yup. Everyone is magical. Anything anyone can imagine can be projected into existence. Their entire world is crammed full of augmented reality.

So what does this mean for the characters?

As kids, this magical ability means silly fun, endless adventures, and deep personal expression. But as they grow, they’re forced to face great emotional conflict, oppressive rules, and a whole lot of vicious competition.

This book was designed for teens, but in Wondertale’s market testing, they’ve found that adults love it just as much.

If you think it might be monkey-flipping-mega to check the book out and give it a review, I’ve made it available as an ePub, MOBI, and PDF for any device. Email me at jrfstory@gmail.com.

Thanks for your time. Best wishes, and happy reading!

—From Jonathan, director of marketing, and all of the others at Wondertale who still believe in magic.

  2. Hello Anna and Erin. I just stumbled across your book blog when searching for a potential review of my debut self-published fantasy novel, and from what I've read so far, your blog, with your honest opinions, is the kind of place I've been searching for As for my story, it's hard to narrow the genre down beyond 'fantasy', as there is so much happening, but it has a rundown, apocalyptic feel throughout. I wrote it specifically with the intention of it being accessible to both adult and young adult readers.
I've included some details for you below. If you're at all interested I can send you a PDF copy of the book via email.
    Title: Crystal Castle
Date of Publication: 24th October 2016 (Kindle), paperback was a week later, both on Amazon.

Brought together by forces unknown, they travel across the vast landscape of New Earth on their quest to bring to an end the evil reign of the mysterious Ruler of the Crystal Castle. During their treacherous journey, which is plagued by the cruel, dark power of the Ruler, they find friendship and love, but also suffer great loss and witness untold horrors as they move closer to the infamous Crystal Castle. 4. Dear The Wood Between The Worlds:

I see you like sci-fi, and thought you'd might enjoy a free advanced release e-copy of the brand new sci-fi comedy 11,984.  This is not a conventional novel. It contains a lot of creative innovations, including punctuation from the future.

Thousands of years in the future, humanity has finally eradicated war, poverty, and all forms of human suffering. With no problems or unanswered questions remaining in the world, everyone is bored out of their minds, that is until the sun starts putting on a light show, the first warning sign it's getting ready to supernova!

Our heroes from the year 11,984 are your typical family of two mothers, three fathers, a couple of kids, and plenty of robots. Fun-loving Troll, so called because of her giant troll doll hair(They don't have names in the future, or wear clothes) is the world's leading hydrologist/interior decorator, whose plans to retire quickly change when faced with the drought to end all droughts. Bulb, bald head glowing like a lightbulb, is the cranky Minister of Rational Thought. His faith in science is tested by the total collapse of society. Last but not least is Litterbot, the clumsy garbagebot who gets no respect, and whose highest priority--to clean--is frustrated by a world without messes.

As the family works on building an escape spaceship, the sun bombards them in changing colors, which unbeknownst to them causes radiation insanity. The sky colors keep growing stronger, and these totally peaceful people are at each other's throats. It gets so bad their bodies mutate (which helps them work faster) and world computer crashes (forcing them to read primitive paper books, and rely more on Litterbot.) Will they launch before getting smashed to pieces?

My first humor novel, Foxavier and Plinka, was published in 2013. May I email the complete 11,984 manuscript of 75,000 words? Thank you.

    1. Hi Scott,
Thanks for giving us the option to review your book! We love getting to hear from authors. I think we're going to pass at this time, since the story-line doesn't really sound like something up our alley. But as an aspiring author, I (Erin) wish you all the best!

  5. Hullo Anna,

I'm writing to ask if you'd consider reviewing my novel The Miseries of Mr. Sparrows (available as an Ebook and in print). This Dickensian comic mystery recounts the misadventures of a humble and hapless law clerk as he wanders the gas-lit streets of an almost-London seeking the Empire's greatest villain.  A baroquely written tragicomic, the novel had been described as "a Guinness cake with cream cheese frosting".

Thanks for your time and considerations,

  8. Hi Anna and Erin,

We would love to send you a free copy (ebook or print copy) of Jason Shulman's book, The MAGI Process, A Nondual Method for Personal Awakening and the Resolution of Conflict or Ecstatic Speech, Expressions of True Nonduality if you would be open to writing an honest review for your blog.

Here is his Amazon author's page. https://www.amazon.com/Jason-Shulman/e/B001JPC8HI

Jason Shulman is an American spiritual teacher whose original work springs from his Judaic and Buddhist background. He is the founder of A Society of Souls: The School for Nondual Healing and Awakening, based in the United States and the Netherlands. There he teaches the distinctive body of nondual work he has developed to awaken the human spirit: Nondual Healing, Impersonal Movement and the Work of Return. Jason’s main concern has been to develop paths of healing the mind, body and spirit based on his own understanding of the difficulties inherent in the human condition. Through his studies and practice, Jason has developed a unique perspective on human consciousness and the nature of existence. His work seeks to translate this perspective into a replicable and clearly-delineated path for other seekers of truth to follow. He has been especially interested in applying personal spiritual work to methods of transforming society at large. To that end, he has created the MAGI Process, a nondual method of working with conflicts between people, institutions and governments. He is the author of numerous monographs and books, and several albums of his work as a singer and songwriter. More about his work can be found at www.societyofsouls.com

Please let me know if this seems like a good fit for your site.

  9. Dear Anna and Erin:

I am not certain if my historical novel, Revenants, The Odyssey Home (Moonshine Cove Publishing) will fall within your review range, but I did not want to presume so I am inquiring to request a review: When a grief-stricken candy striper resolves to return home a nameless veteran of the Great War, she must overcome not only his reticence to reveal his past but the skullduggery of a local congressman who controls the hospital as part of his small-town political fiefdom.

Revenants is a 303-page coming-of-age retelling of Homer’s Odyssey about Betsy’s struggle to regain meaning in her life following her brother’s death in Viet Nam by returning home a war-disfigured patient the VA hospital has secreted away for fifty years. Hidden and forgotten. Almost. Because standing in her path is Congressman Hanna who knows her patient’s name. A name that if revealed would end his congressional career and destroy his marriage. Complicating Betsy’s struggle is her patient’s refusal to surrender his name. Yet he is compelled by his need for contrition to tell his story, dropping clues as to the boy he once was, about the girl he left behind, that Betsy must puzzle together before Hanna discovers she has learned his secret. While not an historical romance novel, a forbidden love, revealed near the end of Revenants, drives the plot. If I have piqued your interest, you can read the first two chapters on BookBuzzr by going to my website and scrolling down to the lower right-hand corner: www.scottkauffman.net.

My fiction career began with an in-class book report written in Mrs. Baer's eighth-grade English class when, due to a conflict of priorities, I failed to read the book. An exercise in invention was called for. I snagged a B, better than the C that I received on my last report when I actually read the book. Thus began my life-long apprenticeship as a teller of tales and, some would snidely suggest, as a lawyer as well, but they would be cynics, a race Oscar Wilde warned us knew the price of everything and the value of nothing. I am the author of the legal-suspense novel, In Deepest Consequences, and a recipient of the 2011 Mighty River Short Story Contest and the 2010 Hackney Literary Award. My short fiction has appeared in Big Muddy, Adelaide Magazine, and Lascaux Review. I am now at work on two novel manuscripts and a collection of short stories. I am an attorney in Irvine, California, where my practice focuses upon white-collar crime and tax litigation with my clients providing me endless story fodder. My Goodreads link is: www.goodreads.com/book/show/28365348-revenants

Thank you for your consideration. I can make Revenants available to you by epub, pdf, gift Kindle, or print.

  10. My name is Kari Lynn West, and I thought you might be interested in reviewing my debut YA fantasy, The Secrets of Islayne. It was recently published on June 30, 2017, and it is about 68,000 words long.

Here’s a short blurb about the story:

A boy who can restore forgotten moments from the past unearths a secret that threatens his entire future.

For centuries, the island of Islayne has given certain residents the ability to revive other people’s memories. These gifted individuals are known as luminators, and sixteen-year-old Ronan Saunders desperately desires to join their illustrious ranks. As he struggles against the prejudice of the old, powerful families who have an iron grip on the trade, Ronan falls under the tutelage of a reclusive luminator, rumored to be insane.

Just when his long-desired future is within reach, Ronan and his three friends discover a deadly secret on the island. As they delve deeper into the mystery, what they find forces them to question their loyalties, doubt long-held beliefs, and wrestle with the dire consequences of revealing the truth. Ronan finds himself torn between everything he loves and the only future he’s ever wanted. The entire fate of the lumination trade hangs in the balance of his decision.

I don’t have a specific timeframe in mind, but I would love if the review could be done within the next two months. Thanks so much for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon!

  13. Hi, I'm looking to see if I can find anyone who is willing to review a PDF, Epub or .mobi of my 44k word sci-fi leaning paranormal/fantasy book called The Illumination Query and post the review in June when I'm crowdfunding it's publication. http://booklaunch.io/22niel/tsod1
If you want to get an overview of the story, there’s a fairly complete explanation of it here: http://publishizer.com/the-illumination-query/ I stopped the original campaign before it ran it’s course because I had initially started it without having any way of publicizing the project. I would like to have a way to get people aware of the book when I re-open it.

  14. Would you like a free copy of this exciting new utopian apocalyptic comedy sci-fi novel?

THE DAY THE SUN CHANGED COLORS

In the year 4377, the Earth is a utopia of total peace, but when the Sun starts changing colors like a giant disco ball, all hell breaks loose. The world's water is going to all dry up in 103 days. The family of two moms, three dads, and two kids must build a spaceship to escape, but the intense bombardment of colors coming from the sky is driving them nuts. Can their clumsy little unappreciated cleaning robot save the day?

    Here are the latest reviews:

"I laughed so hard I had tears streaming down my face"

"As entertaining as The Shape Of Water!"

"Charming and colorful and wildly imaginative, and very cool--the kind of thing only a mad, iconoclastic genius could have conceived and birthed. Bravo..."

Review on GoodReads from Valerie Roberson--
The author, Scott Evans, has you wondering if you are dreaming or really in the future. He writes this with a sense of humor, such as "Warning: The following material contains punctuation from the future" and by golly, it does and that makes the book interesting. He has also put together his own words for us to enjoy. Such as helenreddyshere. Now it took me a while for it to sink in what he was doing. I love this part and love that he used Helen Reddy as one of his words, he must be from the 70's to know who she is. Love it!
After millions, billions, and trillions of years, Earth is how we wish it would be. Peaceful, no money, everybody is equal and everybody loves and respects each other. One day the sky started to turn different colors. The colors of the rainbow.
Now everybody is in an uproar and people are summoned to their professions to figure out what is going on. Yes, people are smart and as young as 2 have degrees in high tech areas. . I laughed so hard, I had tears streaming down my face.

This peaceful planet is now like it was back in 2017. With people all over the world fighting for the last chicken nugget, shoving and couples arguing. This is all from the different sky colors.

You see, the sun is going to explode and the moon is going to crash. So they were told to evacuate to another planet. And the people started to leave, except one family. This family is going to build their own ship. They go to a dispensary to get their parts. This place has all the old left over things from our time. They have never seen most of this stuff. It is so funny to read their comments on things we take for gannet.

So they start to build the ship. But like most families, there is bickering and at least one person who thinks they know it all and are in charge. This goes on for a long time and they are running out of time to leave.

The ending was nothing like I thought it would be. I really liked the ending and found it interesting and shaking my head thinking that it figures. There is a lot of science terms and I had a hard time figuring it all out in the beginning, but all of a sudden the story fell in place for me and I was really enjoying it. This is for the true science fiction lover. Completely different from any other I have come across of. Good story line, good writing (after I figured it all out), good humor and down right unusual."

  16. Dear Anna and Erin,

I'm not sure if my book fits any of your categories but you did mention movie reviews so I am giving it a shot. My book is called: Watching Movies, Watching Stories: An Interactive Guide for Engaging Culture Through Film. I don't think it has a category but so far people are liking it.

The book is unique in that it is truly interactive which makes it fun and addictive. The reason for this is that my book is embedded with tons of film clips that can be easily viewed immediately through QR codes on any smartphone or other internet-connected screen. You will begin to watch movies with new eyes. It also has indispensable helps on how to take what you learn and truly converse with those around you from a biblical understanding. It's sort of like a picture book for adults but instead of looking at pictures, you get to watch movie clips.

I would love for you to check it out.

My name is Alda and my day job is as an attorney at an environmental nonprofit but I write novels on the side. Below is a summary of Quests and Quandaries, self published this past December after using a couple of smaller publishers for my other works. I think it might be a good fit for your interests as it is a young adult, satirical fantasy featuring a diverse cast of characters so I was wondering whether you might be willing to review it on your blog.

The Floating Isles were created millions of years ago when a beetle the size of a continent churned up mud from the seabed for a perch. And things have only gotten weirder since.

Rahni Gazi is the princess of a small inconsequential nation called Savay. She spends her days defying convention, exasperating her parents and torturing visiting heads of state. On the day of her seventeenth birthday though, everything changes. One minute she’s sitting at her birthday feast, bored to death. The next she’s running from a questing fairy. Despite everything she does to avoid it, she’s cursed, by her own parents no less, to go on a quest.

With the proverbial band of sidekicks at her side, Rahni leaves the familiar comforts of home for the mysterious Eigen States, a place where, of course, nothing is as it seems. Or else it wouldn't be much of a quest. Rahni is determined not to let the laws of the land dictate anything, least of all how seriously she has to take the whole matter. Her dearest wish is to get through the quest with as few near scrapes and mortal enemies as possible. If she has to go on a quest, she wants it to be bland, with no nonsense about holding the fate of the world in her hands. Naturally, nothing goes quite as she plans. But what else is new?

  19. Hello!

My name is Daniel McMillan, and I am a first-time author of a Dystopian Sci Fi novel entitled “Eve of Ascension.”

The book came from a story I started over ten years ago and found recently while going through some old notes. I fell in love with it all over again and developed it into a full novel over the last two years. It will be followed up with a sequel this fall.

The book can be found on Indigo at https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/eve-of-ascension-the-fall/9781386228974-item.html?ref=isbn-search if you would like to read about it and see some of the reviews, and I also invite you to my website at https://vector11books.webs.com

I would like very much to have you review EoA. I will gift you an e-copy of the book if you choose to review it.

Please let me know – I am happy to answer any questions you might have.

    Be Well,
    Daniel McMillan

  21. Hi Erin.

After reading several of your reviews on your The Wood Between the Worlds blog, I think you might enjoy my newly (self) published science fiction novel. Your review of "Challenges of the Gods" by C. Hofsetz displayed the depth of insight that I am seeking for an early reviewer.

My book, Perfect Imperfection, centers around the adventures of a not-too-smart, over-weight young man with a receding hairline who stumbles onto and into a secret benevolent society of scientists, called Perfect Imperfection or PI. With assistance PI’s accelerated learning and artificial intelligence technologies, Billings trains to become a virtual secret agent that helps humanity in the face of accelerating scientific, ecological and social evolution. The antagonist, Blackbeard, an elite black hat hacker, employs cutting-edge tech to land the biggest score of his career. An epic virtual game of cat and mouse ensues, with everything in the balance.

I've tried to give hope to the reader despite the path the world is on, there is a way to save us. The point behind the story is to show we can overcome the trivialness of all our imperfections, be they physical, social, intelligence or economic. I will donate all profits of the book to causes that are consistent the book’s key themes.

Erin, by way of introduction, my name is S. E. Gould, and I’m a recovering software entrepreneur and corporate finance executive, looking to spend the best part of my life writing fiction that may help inspire the world to choose a better path.

If you are interested in reviewing, I am happy to send you a pdf, epub or can gift you a free amazon kindle version or paperback. Lastly, if you want an interview or run a giveaway for your followers, I can help you out there as well. I appreciate your consideration.

    Regards,

    S. E. Gould

There's a 4 page intro by heroine Genevieve on the 'About' page of my website http://lizlorow.com and I'll include the sell sheet and blurb here. Feel free to edit for space

Teen witches in magical juvie, because they really messed up!

Genevieve Howe, a 16 year-old witch, is not a bad kid, she’s just a really lousy witch. Sometimes her random thoughts unintentionally turn into actual spells, causing all kinds of trouble.

Now the administration needs Genevieve’s help to find a student/inmate who escaped. Why her? Because even though there’s something ‘wrong’ with Genevieve, she seems to be able to do what others can’t. If she can find Logan, will she turn him in, join him on the run, or find some other way to help without violating the code of honor among magical misfits?

A comedic fantasy romp about incarcerated teen witches, the one that got away, and the only one who can find him.
